Best Way To Wean Your Puppy

A puppy will need to be taught to eat other food, besides just his mother milk or milk from his owner. The continual change of a puppy’s diet from liquid to solids is called the weaning process. At around four to six weeks, a puppy will begin to open his eyes.

He will also begin to move around and experiment with his mother’s solid food that she is eating. Also around this time, you will want to teach your puppy how to eat from a bowl or food dish.

  1. There are four important aspects that need to be considered when trying to establish an early feeding routine.
  2. The weaning process allows the puppy’s owner to feed him a diet that will satisfy him more than the food you are currently feeding the mother dog.
  3. The weaning process will also be sped up. It allows the puppy to eat solid foods at a rather early age.
  4. The bonding process will begin between the owner and the puppy because of the social interaction.

Once your puppy begin to eat solid food, it is important that you reduce the amount of food you are feeding the mother. Since her lactation has decreased, you could easily over feed the mother if you do not decrease her feedings.

Weaning a puppy is a learning process where you condition the puppy’s digestive system to easily digest solid foods. While the puppies are in a mother’s womb, they are being fed nutrients that have already been digested.

Then, once the puppy is born he will drink his mother’s milk. The mother’s milk contains digestive nutrients the pup needs to grow. Once the weaning process begins the puppy’s digestive system has to learn how to digest the new food he is being given.

This process can only be taught as fast as the puppy can learn. Therefore, it should never be rushed or neglected.

You will need to begin formulating your puppy’s diet during the weaning process. You will also need to make sure you add the correct ingredients to your puppy’s diet, which should be non-irritating and easily digested.

Puppy food that is bought at the store can easily be mixed with half or half or another milk substitute. You can then beat the food with a mixer or in a blender to make the food softer.

When you have a larger breed puppy, in addition to the canned food, you will need to use a dry food of higher quality, all mixed together with the liquids. In order to for a larger breed puppy, which grows faster, to thrive, you will need to get the right amount of nutrients in the food you are feeding him.

After about six or seven weeks, a puppy should be eating solid foods only.
