How much dog food should you feed your dog

Dogs of all types have the same basic nutritional needs. However, the specific calories a dog needs will vary according to the type of activity the dog does. A dog that primarily stays in the house would need fewer calories, since out of the other dogs, he would be considered to be the least active.

An indoor dog spends a majority of his time sleeping. For most indoor dogs, the only activity they get is walking to the front door so he can go outside to use the bathroom or walking to the kitchen, from the living room, in order to eat his dinner.

Generally speaking, house dogs are overfed and have more weight problems than any other pet that is kept indoors.

When a dog spends a majority of his time outside, he will have a great need more calories than a dog that spends a majority of his time inside. An outdoor dog will need more calories not only because he will burn them off quicker, but also to help maintain his body temperature, especially during cooler weather.

Although this is often taken into consideration, it is still common to find both outside and inside pets are fed more than they actually need. Therefore, they are often on the verge of being overweight.

It only makes sense that an outside dog is less likely to be obese. Outdoor dogs have a need for higher energy in order to maintain their body heat.

Whenever the dog spends time outside during a cool night or in much cooler weather, he will need extra energy in order to heat his body. In some instances, dogs that are not fed properly may begin to look undernourished.

Calculation: Your dog’s body will determine the amount of food he needs, as well as how many calories he needs to consume. The calculation is the same for all dogs. First, you will want to figure out how many calories your dog needs to maintain a healthy body weight.

Next, divide the number of calories in a pound of food, by the number of calories he ideally needs to consume. From this, you will get the amount of food you should feed your dog.
